Service: Community Service

The community service experience was very engaging and interesting. Interacting with students and allowing them to learn and enjoy in a fun manner allowed me to give back to the community. It also allowed me to share my love of maths and teaching with other students. This experience was an opportunity that allowed me to grow in a manner I never thought I could. It made me more open minded as well as caring. Teaching these students allowed me to appreciate the education I am privileged enough to get. I catered to all the CAS LOs through this experience. They are explained in detail below.

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Throughout my experience I was able to learn and grow by how the students were coping to the teaching style as well as the agenda. I identified my strengths in engaging with the students as well as teaching. Also, I developed in many ways. Learning the ways the students could be helped when it came to solving their difficulties as well as creating a more interesting plan for them to work through so that they can learn about it better and enjoy the process as well.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
While it is not my first time teaching students of the age, the children themselves have a different learning style allowed me to develop better social skills and communication skills. Also developing creative ways of teaching them various topics so that they can stay intrigued and keen to learn allowed me to develop various new skills. The idea of teaching them new and complex topics such as fractions at their age was kind of a challenge especially since the topics were to be taught in gujarati so understanding the concepts they already know and the terms they used for the concepts was a bit of struggle although over the course of time, with better communication the challenge was overcomed.

LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
The CAS experience allowed me to develop a plan since I was the student in charge for the activity and developing the agenda for the students was itself a new experience. It was further challenging due to the subject being such that different grades had to be taught differently. Therefore, understanding the concepts the students might understand as per their grade, 3 categories were created. Also significant changes were made in the plan when a few sessions took place due to the knowledge the students already had as well as the difficulty they were facing in learning a few concepts. Therefore, this CAS experience allowed me to initiate and plan the same.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
The CAS experience allowed me to show my commitment and perseverance due to it being a course of 6 days on weekends. So showing up for the students to teach them every weekend highlighted my commitment and perseverance for the same while myself also engaging in the process and connecting with the students.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Social skills were evident in dividing the roles for the sessions since there were various volunteers for the category. Also since there were various grades and the agenda was divided, working collaboratively really helped to divide the responsibilities and teach the students in a more effective manner.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The engagement could be connected with poverty and lack of education which are global issues. While providing them with education in a fun manner allowed to engage with these global issues. Using different activities, connecting with them and teaching them allowed to engage with the issues these children face.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Teaching the students in a fair manner while providing them with the rights they have show the ethical choices and actions. Also treating them as an equal and not differently shows the ethical choices and actions that were a part of this CAS experience.

Overall, the CAS experience was very engaging and allowed me to grow in a manner that was very new and unique. The engagement with the students was fun and I was grateful for the opportunity and happy to be a part of this service.
