CAS Activity
From 19th to 21st August, I participated in our school’s Cross Country event, which spanned three days and involved both training and competition. This was not only a test of physical endurance but also a valuable CAS experience, allowing me to reflect on personal strengths, challenges, collaboration, and the broader purpose of sports in community building.
Learning Outcomes
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During the runs, I realized that my stamina was better than I had expected, especially in maintaining pace across longer distances. However, I also noticed that my sprinting ability towards the end of the course needs improvement. This helped me reflect on where my strengths lie (endurance) and where I can grow further (speed and recovery).
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
The cross-country terrain was demanding, with hills, uneven paths, and changing weather conditions. Tackling these challenges pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop resilience, pacing strategies, and better breathing techniques.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
I prepared for the event by setting personal goals, planning my hydration and nutrition, and practicing runs in the weeks before. By approaching it with a structured mindset, I made sure I was not just participating, but actively engaging with the experience.
LO4 – Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
The three-day span required consistent effort and mental perseverance. There were moments of exhaustion, but committing to finish each day’s run gave me a sense of discipline and determination.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Cross country may seem like an individual sport, but the event emphasized teamwork. Encouraging teammates, pacing with others, and sharing strategies created a sense of camaraderie. Working together motivated us to push harder and celebrate each other’s progress.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Cross country running promotes health, fitness, and wellbeing, which are globally significant in a world where lifestyle-related diseases are on the rise. By participating, I engaged in promoting an active lifestyle and setting an example for peers to value physical activity.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
I was mindful of competing ethically—staying on track, respecting rules, and supporting others regardless of performance. Additionally, I made responsible choices regarding self-care (hydration, rest, not overexerting to the point of injury), recognizing that respecting my body’s limits is part of sustainable athletic practice.
Reflection
The cross-country event was more than a physical challenge; it was an opportunity for growth in multiple areas. I developed endurance, built resilience, worked collaboratively, and recognized the broader importance of sport in promoting health and community spirit. This experience truly embodied the essence of CAS by balancing personal achievement with collective responsibility.
