Basketball Club Participation

Type of CAS: Activity in school

This academic year, I joined the school’s Basketball Club, where we trained once a week early in the morning and spent additional time at home practising skills and studying the fundamentals of the game. The club focused on building our abilities from the very basics—dribbling, passing, footwork, ball control, coordination, and understanding game rules. Although the sport seemed simple at first, the consistency, effort, and discipline required throughout the year made it a challenging yet rewarding experience.

This CAS experience helped me grow both physically and mentally as I pushed myself to improve, collaborate with teammates, and stay committed over several months. Below is a reflection on how this activity connects to the relevant CAS Learning Outcomes.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

At the start of the year, I recognized some strengths that helped me progress quickly—such as good hand-eye coordination, a natural sense of rhythm in dribbling, and determination to keep practising even when the drills were difficult. However, I also identified areas that needed improvement. My stamina and speed were not consistent, and I often struggled with maintaining proper shooting form.

Through regular coaching and self-practice at home, I became more aware of how my body moves and how small adjustments—such as bending knees, positioning elbows, or shifting weight—could improve my performance. This reflection helped me understand the importance of knowing my strengths while also acknowledging where I still needed growth.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The Basketball Club pushed me out of my comfort zone. Waking up early once a week and arriving at school before regular hours required discipline. Some training sessions were physically exhausting, especially when we repeated drills to improve ball control or footwork. There were also days when I made mistakes, missed shots, or couldn’t coordinate properly.

Despite these challenges, I gained several new skills, such as better dribbling techniques, more stable shooting form, stronger passing accuracy, and improved defensive footwork. I also learned how to analyse my weaknesses by watching videos, researching techniques online, and practising them at home. Through these difficulties, I became more resilient and more confident in handling physically demanding situations.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

One of the biggest demonstrations of perseverance in this experience was attending sessions consistently throughout the entire year. Early morning practices often meant sacrificing sleep or adjusting my routine, but I stayed committed because I genuinely wanted to improve. Even when schoolwork piled up or when I was tired, I still showed up for practice and put in effort.

Practising at home also required motivation. I had to push myself to repeat drills, stretch, or run even when I didn’t feel like it. This long-term perseverance helped me build discipline—a skill that extended beyond basketball into academics and personal growth.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Basketball is fundamentally a team sport, and being part of the club taught me how important teamwork truly is. During drills, we often partnered up for passing, defensive exercises, or shooting sequences. Learning to communicate, coordinate movements, and support each other was essential.

I also realized that collaboration helps everyone grow faster. When a teammate struggled with a technique, we shared tips or demonstrated steps. When working in groups, we helped each other stay motivated, corrected each other’s posture, and celebrated improvements. This experience taught me how cooperation can increase efficiency, build trust, and make learning more enjoyable.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Throughout my time in the club, I became more aware of the ethics of sportsmanship. Being respectful to teammates, playing fairly, listening to the coach, and encouraging others were essential values we followed. I learned that even small actions—like waiting for my turn, sharing equipment, or helping someone who fell—reflect the integrity expected in team sports.

I also realized how important it is to handle competition responsibly. Whether I succeeded or made mistakes, I ensured my reactions were respectful. Practising ethical behaviour strengthened not only my role as a team player but also my understanding of values such as honesty, fairness, and respect.

Conclusion

My year-long involvement in the Basketball Club was much more than just learning a sport—it was an experience that taught me discipline, collaboration, perseverance, and self-awareness. Through regular practice, challenges, and teamwork, I improved both my skills and character. This CAS experience helped me develop a stronger sense of responsibility and determination, and I believe the lessons I learned from basketball will continue to support me in future academic, personal, and athletic goals.
